- ran a lap during PE and then played sports outside
- performed a song at the Grade 5 farewell assembly
- continued our A is for Alberta booklets
- are bringing home our duotangs and most of our school work
- we had a lot of fun doing our tie-dye t-shirts today - we will bring them home tomorrow
- we tried our during the tie-dye activity
- we sounded great during the assembly
- Tomorrow is a half day of school and the last day

- had our awards assembly. Congratulations to all students!!
- looked at our tomatoes and tried to determine which set of seeds went to space
- played basketball, lacrosse and football during PE
- did a survey during math and collected data about the number of people in our families
- continued working on our A is for Alberta booklets
- we were quiet and well behaved during the assembly this morning
- we demonstrated great observation skills as we looked at out tomatoes using our different senses
- we worked quietly on our SS booklets
- we listened to instructions during PE
- Tomorrow is a full day of school and it is Tie-dye Tuesday. Make certain that if you have not paid the $5 to Mrs. Wells that you have a white t-shirt here tomorrow!
- Wednesday is an early dismissal day and our last day of classes! Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday!

- explored many different plants at the park and saw some wildlife. We saw deer, birds and insects and gophers.
- had a lesson on edible and healing plants that Celcan be found in nature. A big thank you to Elder Little Chief who joined us on our field trip today and shared his wisdom with us.
- are bringing home an invitation for Thursday' Celebration of Learning
- we listened to the leaders while at Fish Creek Park
- we were respectful towards nature

- went to James Short school this afternoon to listen to Victor Lethbridge, an Indigenous author. He read us a story that he has written called Little Chief and Mighty Gopher. He also talked to us about bullying.
- we met Rubix, a rap artist. He worked with us to write our own rap song about courage. We learned about couplets from him
- read our guided reading books and talked with our group members about the characters and made predictions
- we were all playing fairly during PE
- we showed respect to our guest speaker and we set a good example for the younger students
- Field trip forms are due THURSDAY!! Late forms will not be accepted
- This Friday,students at GWS are invited to James Short for the annual pancake breakfast. We will not be eating until after 10:00 a.m. so make sure that you eat before you come to school
- This will be the last week to sign out library books. If you have overdue books, you will not be permitted to sign out new books this week unless they are returned before Thursday. If you cannot find your books, please see Mrs. Wells or Ms. Hunt to find out the cost of replacing them.

- Information letters are coming home for our upcoming health unit on Human Sexuality. Parents often have many questions about this unit. I would encourage you to contact Mrs. Wells with any questions or concerns. Also, please check out the following website. We will be following the activities and lessons from this page.
- We need volunteers for our Art felting next week. There is a letter coming home today for parents to complete if you are available to help out. Without volunteers, we will not be able to run this program.

- had a class discussion and reviewed expectations for work and behavior that is expected. If work is not being completed or if students are demonstrating behavior that is not kind, parents will be getting a phone call from the teacher.
- did a pre-assessment in math on time and we completed a show what you have learned for area and perimeter
- started writing a letter back to our family that we based our homestead project on last week
- had a fire drill. Our class was quiet and did very well.
- did PE outside today. Those students who played soccer demonstrated good sportsmanship. The mosquitos were out and hungry!

- listened to Ms. Brierley as she explained our SS task
- Permission forms for next week's field trip are due back to Mrs. Wells. REMEMBER that late forms will NOT be accepted. I really do not want anyone to miss out on this opportunity so please get the forms back early. DO not wait until the last day!

- had an amazing time learning at Fort Calgary. We talked about Captain Deane and the Deane House, we learned about the North West Mounted Police, we examined many neat artifacts, we went on a mission through the museum to find John Smith and we dressed up in old fashioned clothing
- did a school yard clean-up and picked up garbage in our playground and along the fence
- we were able to answer a lot of questions based on what we have already learned in class
- we were responsible and respectful when we handled the artifacts
- we were quiet as we traveled around the museum at Fort Calgary and represented our school well

- Tomorrow is "Hats on for Mental Health". Students are encouraged to wear a hat tomorrow in recognition of all of those who struggle with mental health issues on a daily basis.

As many of you know, there was a small fire today at our school over the lunch hour. Most of the students were outside playing at the time. When the fire alarm sounded, our students followed emergency procedures and we safely evacuated to James Short School for the afternoon. When the fire department determined that it was safe to do so, we returned to GW Skene for dismissal.
I am very proud of all the grade 4 students in Room 1 for their responsible behavior and calmness during this afternoon's evacuation. They knew what to do and followed procedures with levelheadedness.

- we were quiet when we entered the room for Mindfulness. More and more students are demonstrating mindful bodies and putting real effort into their mindfulness practice
- we all picked up 5 or more pieces of garbage after recess and tidied up our school playground. It felt good to show pride in our school and our community
- Our family dance is tomorrow evening from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. inside our school gym. There is no cost to come to the dance. All students must be accompanied by an adult to attend. There will be snacks and drinks for sale - all proceeds will support our school. We look forward to seeing you then!

- had a substitute teacher in the afternoon
- played volleyball in PE
- learned new strategies to add with regrouping
- learned about different regions in Alberta
- everyone was quiet and focused during guided reading
- lots of work was done during Social Studies
- everyone listened really well during Mindfulness

- G.W. Skene School invites you to our Family Dance on October 26th from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. inside our school gym. There is no cost to come to the dance. All students must be accompanied by an adult to attend. There will be snacks and drinks for sale - all proceeds will support our school. We look forward to seeing you then!

- talked about summarizing and recognizing good words to use to describe character traits/personality of the characters we read about in our books.
- students listened well during our literacy discussion and were accountable for their work

- learned about historical sites in Alberta during SS
- we corrected our addition worksheets that we did yesterday and continued working on addition with regrouping
- did mental challenge tasks in PE. We had to line up according to our birthdays without talking to each other and we had to line up tallest to shortest without stepping off our line.
- talked some more about our guided reading work and expectations
- decided that we will begin our guided reading work tomorrow
- literacy block because everyone was on task
- we learned a lot of new information about places in Alberta that we did not know about before
- we showed fair-play and cooperation during the PE challenges
- Alberta sites to see - homework for some students who did not complete it in class. A minimum of 4 sites need to be recorded on the worksheet
- We have a field trip coming up on November 8th. Permission forms are coming home today. We need parent volunteers for this this trip. ALL Volunteers must have the annual volunteer form completed before attending this trip.

- students came in quietly this morning ready to learn
- we had a meeting about literacy and guided reading agreements
- Our Coupon Book Campaign is coming to a close! The last day to purchase your coupon books is Wednesday October 19th. The top five sellers in our school will earn a prize. Thank you to all of the friends and families who have purchased these from our school; we really appreciate your support!

- students were very creative with their artwork this morning

- repeated the PE challenge from yesterday but added a new twist. Ask me about it!
- signed out library books to read over our fall break
- learned how levers can be classified as first-class, second-class and third-class levers
- worked on addition of 3-digit numbers in math
- enjoyed our pizza fun lunch
- we are getting better at identifying the effort, load and fulcrum in levers
- PE - all groups were able to demonstrate success at today's challenge!
- we were very focused on our work and learning during math
- if you ordered school photos, they are being sent home today
- remember to check the lost and found before tomorrow. Any unclaimed items will be sent away for donation.

- learned about levers in Science. We did an experiment where one of our students lifted Mrs. Wells off of the ground using a lever.
- did a team challenge in PE where we had to move our whole team across the gymnasium without touching the floor using 2 mats. We worked with our new gym squads.
- listened to a story called "Thanks for Thanksgiving" and then we worked on our own Thankfulness book.
- tried to complete our addition work during Math.
- some students finished their math work and some are very close to finishing
- students showed great sportsmanship and teamwork during our PE challenge
- we were quiet when we were supposed to be
- Pizza fun lunch is tomorrow for those who ordered it
- Bring $1 for a drink tomorrow - leadership students will be selling drinks over the lunch hour
- Library tomorrow - make sure you return any overdue books

- played tag games during PE. We learned a new game called "Wasp-ital"
- looked at where Alberta is in relation to other provinces and territories in Canada
- practiced addition and subtraction skills by playing Salute
- had indoor recess today because it was too chilly outside
- did a dictionary challenge
- showed good sportsmanship during PE and we were better at responding when the whistle went
- we were mindful after lunch
- ALL students are required to have indoor shoes to wear. Please make certain that you send in a pair that can be left at school.
- Pizza lunch is on Thursday for those who ordered it
- We have a full week of school. Next week is fall break (No school for students from Oct. 7-16, students return to class on Tuesday, October 17)

- received some exciting news (but also kind of sad...) We want to welcome Mrs. Morrison to our grade 4 team. She will be beginning on Monday. Some of our friends will be changing classrooms. A letter is coming home today for those who will be moving.

- the Boas and the Rattlers played against each other in intramurals

- their was lots of sportsmanship shown during intramurals
- all students entered the classroom quietly and mindfully after lunch
- in Language Arts, we reviewed how to use a dictionary and then students used the dictionary all day long to look up words
